In 1499, Florentine navigator Amerigo Vespucci sailed south along coastlines no European map had ever recorded. He was the first to recognize that what Columbus had reached was not Asia — but an entirely new world. In 1507, cartographer Martin Waldseemüller named the continents after him: America. We carry that name as a responsibility. To know this region as deeply as it deserves to be known.
